Beans in Education.
Learning through performance
Beans in Education (BiE) is our Theatre in Education group where students use Forum Theatre to create and deliver performances and training workshops across the UK that promote best practice when working with people with learning disabilities.
Our students regularly perform at hospitals, universities, and conferences, using theatre as a dynamic and engaging tool to support the training of health and social care professionals. Through a combination of performance, discussion, and interactive workshops, they bring key topics such as accessibility, inclusion, and rights to life in a way that is both impactful and memorable. What is a suitcase show?
We know what you’re thinking: what is a Suitcase Show?
Well, it’s exactly what it says on the tin!
These shows are our ready-to-go performances that we tour around the country and take far and wide. All packed up in a suitcase.
Life of I
10 actors. 10 scenes. 10 individual stories to be told. Life of I is a production by BiE which shows difference in the way they would like to express it. Each scene has been written and devised by our actors with the hope of breaking the stigmas and assumptions that are put on upon them everyday.
“I have a learning disability and… and what?”

Health Bites
A series of short scenes set in various health and social environments. This play delivers a serious message in a light-hearted way. Although exaggerated for comedic effect, each of the scenes presented in Health Bites are based on real-life experiences of the actors and their peers.
Sunshine Support
“What’s it like living at the Sunshine Support residential home? We hope none of you have to find out.”
Follow Oliver as he moves out of his family home for the first time, excited for some big changes in life. His arrival at Sunshine Support brings lots of challenges, despite promising ‘a home where your needs come first’, or so they say…

April Fool
April Fool tells the story of April, a girl who has just moved to a new school and is really struggling to fit in. We follow April’s journey as she overcomes isolation, bullying and discrimination.
April Fool is derived from lived experiences of some of the actors at The Baked Bean Charity.
We Want it All
Having made its debut at the Labour Party’s ‘A Few of the Many’ Conference in 2019, We Want It All uses humour to shine a light on the major inequalities in a modern Britain.
BiE deliver a thought-provoking presentation that explores the current reality of living with a learning disability and the truth of austerity.

After Life
Nobody likes talking about death, but what if we could make it easier?
After Life is a touching play about death and dying, using humour to tackle the taboo of death, especially for people with learning disabilities. By keeping it light, the play tackles the taboo of death by encouraging open conversations and offering a simple yet powerful perspective on life’s journey for everyone.
